How do you decide which albums/what merch to buy? Where do you usually purchase from? Do you buy new or used? Do you care about extras a lot (like PCs, preorder benefits, etc)? Do you feel like buying albums/merch helps support the artists or just their management companies?
:rara:

Personally I buy almost exclusively second hand, like new items. Mostly albums but sometimes merch. I am starting to appreciate merch more if it is actually something I can use/get joy from (for example, apparel like hats and shirts but also posters). There are limits to how much money I will spend, however. And I prefer not to buy new for that reason, but also because I don't know if I believe much of my money is going to the artist--I feel like I still 'support' artists in spirit by buying, but I am under no delusion it's gonna make their career for them. Buying albums new from places that count them in Hanteo charts and stuff sounds nice, but I just don't know if I trust it 100 percent. PCs are not super important for me, so I usually get albums without secondhand around $8-$15 dollars (including shipping). I buy albums primarily based on 2 factors: 1. Songs (maybe obvious), 2. Concept (like visual concepts)

I won't buy used unless I am not interested in the cards or the albums are tough to come by. The only album I bought used is Monsta X' Rush Regular Version (the silver one) because I already owned the Secret Version and just wanted to have the pictures.

Monsta X' new releases I will ALWAYS buy new and mostly even preorder because I really want the preorder benefits (oh gosh, soon it'll start again nooo) and also give them a sale because it's important to me.

I'd ask myself:
1.) Is it by one of my faves?
2.) Do I like the album musically?
3.) Is it a repackage? If so, is it even worth getting it especially if you have the original version of the repack?
4.) Do I REALLY want it? Does my shelf NEED it?

I buy all of my albums from the local kpop store here (never tried buying online).

I just legit buy it if it's EXO or one of my bias's solos. Usually I like to listen to the album before buying to make sure i'm not buying anything I dislike, but I went in blind with both Jongdae and Baekhyun's albums and don't regret preording! If they were still newbies I'd be hesitant to buy things, but they have established they release a sound that I love so I don't question preordering anymore.

As far as merch goes: Has Baekhyun on it? I also buy LMAO!! But all jokes aside, I don't buy every single thing he's on~ Just pictures I think look nice to display or put in my photo album, and I turned into a photocard collector so I try to get all his cards for a reasonable price or trade.
As far as the whole group goes I try to buy things I'll use like again, posters or lightstick upgrades if I'm going to the concert. I don't really buy things like EXO erasers or straws because to me personally... "Just why??" lol. I want to spend my money on other things too or just save it!

I buy from musicplaza for albums -always new- and SMTOWNandSTORE for special EXO merch (though... recently I bought a shit ton of albums from them too oi!). Buying in person at SMTOWNandSTORE is miles better because cheaper and no shipping fees(plus it's tax free!), but for EXO's anniversary and for BBH birthday I did go ahead and pay the $30 shipping fee to buy their merch. It was a limited time only thing and I don't regret it because the jewelry is super cute and fits me well (I have very small wrists so having his bracelet to fit me made me so happy)! I /used/ to buy albums from eBay, but I love MusicPlaza way too much to go back! They give me such nice freebies for preordering, and gave me a limited edition baekhyun PC I can not get over still! I'm not sure if they knew the worth of it, but they made me happy as hell lol.

Oof, I can't speak for other companies, but SM takes a lot of the cut when we buy EXO stuff. EXO's still doing good and I love supporting my boys, but I always felt like it was unfortunately supporting SM >> EXO. But EXO appreciates it and are still getting paid something, I love seeing their sales and their happy little faces, so it's not a loss to me. They're doing what they love and making other people happy in the process, so nothing wrong with that.

This is how I feel and it makes me feel bad--but at least when I am buying secondhand I am reclaiming things that should be loved to a happy home and SM isnt being paid twice. And I choose to believe the idols themselves are just happy that fans want to support them in any way (even if they arent actually getting that money)

Also I would love to get some official jewelry for groups/bias of mine but that stuff is spendy af and almost no one sells it secondhand. I have super small wrists myself.

I usually only buy albums merch-wise, I've bought from kpopmart and also bought from the group's official store. I typically only buy albums for my UB groups, or from group's whose albums I like every song on (which is actually quite rare). For this reason I own most of NCT's albums, and my sister has bought all of BTS's. Given, over half of my NCT albums were gifted to me by my best friend, in fact almost all my kpop merch is from her LOL.

I'm not like crazy about photocards lol, but they're a nice keepsake I guess. I love preorder benefits especially if it's a poster lol, that can really drag me in. I've only ever pre-ordered twice. Again, I usually only buy an album if I like most all the songs on it so pre-ordering isn't always my thing.

I agree with what was said above, although album sales money for companies like SM doesn't always go to the artist, I think even just seeing the amount sold or having sales/popularity benefits the group's image and future popularity.

When I started to buy albums, I bought my ult's new albums if I liked them and then started collecting the older ones. I like buying official albums because of the PCs and supporting the artist. I am also planning to buy some prints and some fan-made merch.
For albums, I buy them from Gmarket because they give you codes as you buy the album and using that, you are contributing to support the artist for the album awards (Sorry, I forgot which award).

I have never purchased any fan made goods but I am interested to know others thoughts on fanmade merch; personally, if it is something I would enjoy and made well I would totally go for fan merch. I understand some people may argue that the music artist isnt getting any of that money, and that fans will use official images reprinted to create their own items for sale, but assuming they've put their own hands on the work and created something original and well-made I don't see anything terribly wrong with it. After all, these are the same fans that support the artists by spreading their love of their work and going to concerts etc

Yea, I don't think many of the sellers are people who are trying to take our money and don't support the artist. I can see most of the money going to albums and concerts but I understand why some people are not supporting it.
Also, I am starting a badge/pin collection and I have not found any official ones so like, I kinda have to get the fan-made.

i buy albums from my fav groups or if i really just like the music they put out.

I think It depends on goods/seller... Like I bought a few pins because they used the money in return to buy albums and gave some away
